Progressive scan is an improvement over interlaced scanning that scanned the odd lines and then the even lines. DVD Region Coding
The regional coding system, used by the movie industry, uses digital codes to divide the world into regions and then formats DVDs with these codes. Only a compatible DVD player can play a coded DVD. For example, a region one DVD player (US/Canada) cannot play a region two (Europe/Japan) DVD.
Up-converting DVD players
Many newer DVD players feature picture-quality enhancement known as "up-converting." These video players artificially increase the picture resolution of DVDs to near resolution to take advantage of the display capabilities of high-definition TVs.
USB or Memory Drive Connectivity
Some of the newer DVD models will allow you to plug a USB or memory drive directly into the player. This will give your DVD player the ability to share your favorite images as well as additional media without the need for a computer. Parental Lockout
When the DVD has a rating capability, the DVD player could read the rating and either play or not play the DVD based on the guidelines employed by the user.
REMOTE CONTROL TYPE
DVD players may come with three types of remotes:
A dedicated remote, which only runs the DVD player
A multi-brand remote, which can control other components, like and TVs made by other manufacturers
A learning remote, which can learn the signals from other remotes and assign them to a button. This feature is useful if you have uncommon brands of components to control.

FUNCTIONS OF A DVD PLAYER
Change disc
The dvd player has the function of changing disc. That is you can watch as much disc you want, what you need to do is to simply press the open button and you will be able to remove the previous disc and put another one then it will play after you have pressed the close button.
Quick language
This function automatically selects pre-configured audio and sub picture stream so there is no need to select them from the DVD menus. Useful with two disc DVDs which have a starting selection of language but this selects national dubbing and you want to have original sound with subtitles - this would involve using the menus (and that may be unwanted interruption in the middle of two-disc movie) but with Quick language it's a matter of a single click / key press.
