A hair dryer, or blow dryer is an electromechanical device that blows hot air over damp hair to speed the evaporation of water to dry the hair.

Buying A Hair Dryer: Features To Look For

Size

Some hair dryers are big and bulky with a long barrel. This allows you to hold the barrel for better control as you dry and style your hair. However, there are also travel hair dryers that are compact and easy to store.

Ionic

Many hair dryers now have an ionic feature. This is to reduce frizz and drying time. If you want a greater amount of negative ions to counter your frizz and have shinier hair, then you can go one level up and get a tourmaline hair dryer.

Fan & Heat Settings

Standard-sized hair dryer will usually have separate fan and heat settings. That means there are 2 separate switches to control these 2 elements. So, you can have low fan speed but high heat settings and vice-versa.

Switch Location

There are 2 common locations for the fan and heat switches. They are on the back and side of the handle. It is a matter of personal preference. Some people find it easier to flick the switches when it is at the back while others prefer the side. 

Cool Shot

This is another important feature for those who use the hair dryer for styling purposes. Most standard hair dryers will have a Cool Shot button on the handle. When you press it, cool air will be released. However, many models require you to press it down continuously to get the cool blast. It is not a big problem but it can be a hassle.

How many attachments do you need with your hair dryer? Usually, the hair dryer will come with one concentrator. However, some are sold with 2 or more concentrators of different widths.

Cord Length

Cord length matters if your power outlet is a little far from your vanity. It also matters if the outlet is near to the floor and you need to stand when using the hair dryer. Bear in mind that the hair dryer needs to be lifted over your head at times to dry the top part. So, if the cord is too short, the hair dryer might not be able to reach to the top of your head.
