A musical instrument is an instrument created or adapted to make musical sounds. In principle, any object that produces sound can be considered a musical instrument—it is through purpose that the object becomes a musical instrument.

Classification of Musical Instruments

Musical instruments can be grouped into categories based on the way in which they produce sound. There are three main categories of instruments.

The three primary types of musical instruments are string instruments, wind instruments, and percussion instruments.

1. String instruments

it generate a sound when the string is made to vibrate using any variety of means (plucking, strumming, hitting, etc.). The sound or note is dependent on the length of the vibrating portion of the string, its mass, and the tension to which the string has been tuned or placed. Some examples of string instruments include the violin, guitar, and harp.

2. Wind instruments

it produce sound when a column of air inside of them is made to vibrate by the player blowing air into them. Many wind instruments use a reed to vibrate the air. The sound or note generated is relative to the shape of the instrument and to the length of the column of air. This group is typically subdivided into brass and woodwind instruments. Some examples of wind instruments include the clarinet, trumpet, flute, and saxophone.

3. Percussion instruments

it create sound when struck or hit. Percussion instruments can generate sounds with or without pitch. The type of sound created is determined by the shape and material of the part of the instrument to be struck, as well as the shape of the resonating cavity. Some examples of percussion instruments include drums, bells, the triangle, and the xylophone.

1. Make sure it's the right instrument for you

2. Is it the right size?

especially for kids, you have to consider the size of the musical instrument.

the cost of the one you desire is also important to note.

4. Have you considered the noise implications?

Learning an instrument can be a noisy affair. 

5. Make sure it's a good-quality instrument with no structural weakness

6. Do you have room for it?

if the instrument is a very large one, the space in your room or house should be considered before purchasing it.

7. Don't force yourself to love an instrument just because it makes you look cool

8. Does it make you sound good?

If your new instrument doesn't immediately make you sound and feel like a complete professional, something is wrong. 

9. Buying second-hand? Make sure it's clean
